" Environmental Clubs "


the negative and the mistaken practices towards environment and its components in our local environment, deserve our attention. If we look around us every day, we can see the dangers and problems which surround us due to the contamination of the environment. To limit this dangers and aware the future generations, it was formed the environmental clubs , to let the local society know these dangers which had resulted from the contamination of the environment, and to treat the causes according  to the available possibilities.


The environmental clubs began to be established three years ago, in cooperation between the Ministry of Education and SPANA . the center of these clubs is the city of Damascus countryside , in Al-Mleha school .


The aims of the environmental education are:

  1. knowledge : it helps the pupils to understand the environment , its problems, and their responsibilities towards it.
  2. awareness: pupils realize the environment  and contribute in protecting and improving it.
  3. values: obtaining  strong feelings to concern and caring with the environment.
  4. skills: resolve the problems of the environment and improve it at same time.
  5. share: individual or collective share to resolve the environment problems.


We depend on the outdoor activities for that. Where it resulted learning chances , which enrich the pupils capabilities , and develop their abilities , and enable them to develop their talents and obtaining new knowledge , gaining rational and scientific skills through their own activity and the continuous training.


-          To establish the clubs . it must be found bases and rules , which are:

  1. announcing in the school to whom it may concern to contribute in the environmental clubs.
  2. choose group of the interested pupils who want to become  members in the club, about 25 pupils for each club.
  3. the pupils has to agree with the " pledge " to respect the environment and animals.
  4. carrying out first test for these groups to be introduced in the first stage.
  5. opening special records for these clubs.
  6. identify special justification for these clubs.
  7. identify the clubs aims.
  8.  put a plan for each club.
  9. put a program of the activities for each club .
  10. specify the available tools in the club.
  11. identify the time and place of the meeting of the club members
  12. giving each club its own name and logo.
  13. making cards for the club members to be distinguished from the other pupils.
  14. specify the supervisors  and the responsible persons for each club.


The members of the club are meeting in the living room . it is a special room, wide and equipped with different and various tools: light board, video, TV , camera. in addition to,  microscopes, magnifying glasses , and catching nets for ponds, books and journals.  The members are meeting continually. They receive information about the environment, practice activities such as: drawing, collecting trees leaves, and making artistic pictures from the environment remains , or making nests for birds , or trap for insects . this room will continue be a place for the weekly meeting in summer.

Moreover, the living room, receives  the pupils from the other schools. Where visit annually about 1500 pupils from the 4th class to the 8th class. They receive information about the environment and raise subjects for discussion. Some of these subjects are:

1-      the environmental contamination and its affect on the living being.

2-      Method for protection the local environment from contamination.

3-      Damages which had caused to the environment by human

4-      The natural sources in the village and how protect it.

5-      Dangers which had resulted by using the insecticide

6-      Benefits of trees for human

7-      Contamination - its causes, ways of spreading, and how limit it.

8-      Dryness – its causes , how limiting it.

9-      The role of human in the industrial contamination.

10-  The natural contamination of the environment – its causes and results.


 Environmental garden


The environmental garden is about 1000 square meters . it is utilized completely. There are many forest and fruit trees, cages for birds and  animals. It contains also, pond and watering net by drops. Everything in the garden are utilized for protecting environment and animal. In addition to, it is good place for experiments to discover the birds , insects or mosses . it is natural pattern for the coexistence of the living beings together within complete natural environment , which is clean from the industrial contamination and insecticide .

Moreover, the club members practice their all outdoor activities in this garden . the pupils of the other school visit it annually for knowledge , discover, and love nature.


Activities by the Club Members

  1. keeping the school and the garden clean
  2. planting plants , seeds and trees in flowerpots or in the garden.
  3. protecting and caring with the animals in the garden.
  4. drawing pictures related to the importance of keeping the environment clean.
  5. making boards from the trees leaves and seeds , or from the environment remains.
  6. feeding the animals and birds in the garden.
  7. cleaning the pond continually from the leaves and mosses.
  8. making nests for birds and traps for insects and watch them.
  9. carrying out sport and cultural competitions , and entertaining games for the club members.
  10. visiting the public gardens and the zoo.
  11. visiting one near farm and know the way of working , and advising the farmers to decrease the using of the insecticide.
  12. taking  photos for the aspects that damage the environment and lead to the contamination.

The members are distributed into three groups


Aims of Club:

1-      definition the club members  with the ingredients of the environmental system.

2-      Enforcing the friend behavior towards  the environment and its ingredients.

3-      Developing the knowledge and the necessary skills to investigate the problems and the searching for the suitable solutions.

4-      Preparing the club members to be able to take the responsibility towards the local environment.

5-      Developing the love for the collective work , and emphasizing the individual work and protecting it.

6-      Widening the work of the club to contain the parents and local communities .

7-      Setting up environmental exhibitions and activities.

8-      Enforcing the positive behavior to keep the environment clean.

9-      Taking care with the school garden and contribution in planting trees.

10-  Carrying out environmental scientific journeys.

11-  Enforcing the positive attitudes towards the animal

12-  Concerning and caring with animals in the school garden.


Plane of Club:

1-      distribution the club members into groups

2-      specifying the work of each group and identify guided for them.

3-      Working to issue wall journals and guide bulletin periodically .

4-      Setting up exhibitions, seminars and activities which are concerning with environment.

5-      Granting medals and certificate of estimation for the club members.

6-      Honoring the distinguished members at the end of the year in front of all pupils.

Evaluating the work of the club during the first stage "environmental  hobbyist"


Through the activities which had done by the members of the club during the first stage , and the information, skills, and the positive behavior that they had obtained towards the environment, it was noticed positive and active developing , which had appeared on the members , through their voluntary participation and educational information and the practical behaviors towards the environment and its ingredients , and through their understanding of the environmental problems . the members became qualified for passing to the second stage " friend environment " .


Second stage " friend environment " :

Due to the hard working of the environment hobbyists in " Animal Friends Club ", in the last year to the beginning of 2007 , they learned concepts and ideas related to the environment , and due to the cooperation between the section of the rural teaching in the department of education and Al-Mleha school , the environment hobbyists had been examined , and became qualified to the next stage " Friend environment ".


Justifications of setting up the club:

-          limiting the dangers which are surrounding the environment and affect directly or indirectly the human beings .

-          ignorance of the local society by the importance of  protecting the environment , and aware the common people of the relation between the environment and our life directly.

-          Keeping the environment clean, and protecting and caring with animals all the time.



  1. preparing the club members to take their responsibility to be able to work positively towards the environment, in the future.
  2. widening the works of the club to include the families and the local associations.
  3. enforcing the positive attitude towards the environment.
  4. developing the love for knowledge of the members of club to discover the environment and its contains individually by depending on ones own.
